Career Services for Students
Welcome back students to another exciting semester of what promises to be a great, but fast paced year. The Career Center's theme this year is Start Your Career Adventure Today and Map out Your Career Plan ! Your UMHB Career Services Center, which is a part of the University Student Affairs division, is here to provide assistance to undergraduate and graduate students in career development and preparation endeavors. Programs include assessment inventories, personalized career action plans, career documents preparation , interview skills development, special career related workshops, internships, and part-time and full time job searches. We like to say that "Career Services Is Working To Get Crusaders Working"!
Special Events
Several times a year, special programs, seminars, and events are held. These events range from Dress for Success Programs, Mock Interviews, Networking or Not Working, Show Me the Money, My Space, Facebook and my Future Employer, Dinner Etiquette Programs, Gadgets Etiquette, Career Self Analyis Review, Majors & Mentors, and 8 job fairs.
Part-Time Jobs
The Career Services Center maintains most current postings on the Find a Job section of this web site. In addition, we post on CS JOB Boards in key locations on campus available current part-time jobs. The Find a Job section list jobs related to degree majors, internships, part time, seasonal, and full time opportunities with contact information, job description, pay ranges, and how to apply. Also, students may register with career services for their resumes to be included in the resume data base for job lead connections. In addition, students may register in the Center's Pre Cru Sitters & Tutors on Call program which entiles stuents to automatic eblasts of up to the minute new childcare or tutoring job postings from the area.
Full-Time Jobs
The Career Services Center maintains most current full-time job openings on the Find a Job section of this web site. These postings include teaching positions (public and private school positions and elementary through university level positions), business, government, and social services (including corporate, federal, and state government, as well as health and social services positions). Job applications are on file for a number of school districts and state and federal jobs.
Credentials
Another well used complimentary service of the Career Services Center includes the setting up of credentials file. This is especially vital to you since it places your biographical sheet, transcripts, letters of reference, copies of commendations and recognitions, resume , and other materials you desire to use in order to impress a prospective employer in one central system. It is maintained for you up to 5 years after graduation and mailed to whomever you wish to have a copy, and a permanent record is kept which lists when and to whom it has been sent.
Resume Workshops
These are offered at a variety of times each semester to help you develop an effective resume. Individual resume clinics may be made by appointment or available on a walk in basis, depending on the availability of a career coach. Today in our global marketplace and economy, competition is the greatest it has ever been. A 5 star resume is only the beginning in the job search process. The CRU Career Coach will help you customize your resume to the targeted and semi-targeted search for that internship, part time, or full time position.
Interview Skills Seminars
These are offered at a variety of times each semester to help you prepare for that critical job interview. Topics covered include questions most frequently asked by interviewers, when the interview actually begins, how to prepare, how to dress and present yourself, how to handle nervous habits, and more. There are different techniques for business, health services, and public schools. Mock interviews may be scheduled with 7 day advance appointment scheduling required, and may be tapped for a DVD disc copy with suggestions for ensuring a job offer.
Career & Self-Assessment
This is an important part of the career planning process. The UMHB Career Services Center, located in the Mabee Center, has an array of personal and skills assessment programs on line to help in your career decision-making process. It is a carefully designed career planning program that will provide you with information about yourself, including interest, abilities, and values. It will NOT tell you what to do or give you easy answers for your career decision, but it can ease your pain. Most of these are offered to students at no charge and completed from the student's residence. The Career Center Team invites studens to arrange a short assessement review appointment with a UMHB CRU Career Coach to review the results and map out a plan to use the information. Appointments and specific information can be obtained by calling 295-4691 or emailing careerservices@umhb.edu.
